GRANT WRITING SKILLS FOR DOCTORAL STUDENTS

GRANT SOURCES ON THE WEB

General Sites. There are many of these. I selected a few below that I believe will be most useful. Finding one site often leads to many others.

The Society of Research Administrators (SRA). Grants Web.

This is a very complete source updated frequently and divided into four sections:
The one problem with this site is that it is so large that pages are slow to load.

Community of Science Web Server.

Another great site originally created in 1988 by John Hopkins Univ. to bring together information on scientific research. It is now a private organization. The Funding Opportunities Database is particularly worthy of note. Can also get to many federal sites. Incliudes a patent citation database.

Univ. of Illinois at Chicago. Grant Getting Page

A easy to follow collection of federal home pages, foundations, forms, online search tools, and the like. Very complete.

Office of Research Services, UNC-CH

Our University's assistance to researchers. The Grant Source Service is a searchable online database (actually gateway to 12 online databases). Also contains links to info on human subject review boards and On the Lighter Side, which includes Science Made Stupid, and The Annals of Improbable Research among other items.

University Departmental and Sponsored Research Offices

A hot listing of all the university home pages for research.

GAIL: Grant Getters Accessing Online Links

A private effort similar to this one.

Private Sites. Really only one major source, although information on foundations is found is a number of other places.

The Foundation Center.

The print source of the Foundation directory is still much easier to search. It does have a nice site map which calls attention to a lot of helpful aspects including a proposal writing short course under their online library.
Philanthropy Links

Links to foundations, corporations, charities, other nonprofits, etc.

Council on Foundations - Resources for Grantmakers

An a-z listing of foundations and corporations willing to support grants.

Gates Library Foundation

This has been in the news so much, I felt I had to list it.

Public Sites. Most of these are listed in the general sources above. One or two of the major sources are listed separately here because of their potential importance or usefulness to you.

Library of Congress. Official Federal Government Web Site.

This is like the Government Organization Manual. Contains every agency with all its parts plus independent agencies and commissions.

The Federal Register.

This inelegant site found on the National Archives and Administration Page is the official daily publication place for rules, notices and proposed changes for all the Federal agencies.

National Science Foundation

A major source of research funding. See their Grants & Awards page with lists of all grants, deadline dates, FAQs, policy manual, procedures, etc.

The National Institutes of Health

See their Grants and Contracts searchable database for research and fellowship programs.

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

An attractive and well-designed site. See their Money Matters page for information on grants, fellowships, contracts, and RFPs.

National Endowment for the Humanities

See the easy-to-navigate pages on applying for a grant. Includes fellowships, deadlines, and application forms.

National Academies of Science

Although not the first choice for funding information, a great source of news and policy. Great for supporting material in proposal.

The Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance

Of more interest to nonprofit agencies and those seeking developmental grants, see their search page.

The Commerce Business Daily

A daily list of U.S. government procurement invitations. Probably of more interest to a broker but the beltway bandits check this regularly.

The Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education.

This organization is concerned with improving teaching and learning plus access to postsecondary education. Provides grants but not a lot of information about this on this site.
