Current Status | Spring, 1998: This initial effort represents the pilot project for BOTNET at UNC, which has focused on the Gymnosperms of the Southeastern United States, which is a fairly discrete unit of about 17 genera and about 35 species, depending upon the floristic treatment used. For this project, about 200 images of gymnosperm herbarium specimens and cones have been captured. As the effort grows, other associated data and information will be included, including historical floristic keys, an interactive polyclave key, distribution maps, photographs, and line drawings - all towards assisting the users in accurate identification and distribution of plants based on the UNC Herbarium specimens. The emphasis in this project will be the Southeastern United States, and more specifically, the state of North Carolina. Through the efforts of BOTNET, which does not seek to displace any other existing effort in the southeast, it is hoped that bridges can be built for easy access and interaction to the botanical information in other Southeastern United States institutions as well as others across the country and world. |
