Electronic Mail
Provides a means to send electronic messages from one person to another
Same architecture - client, server, and protocol
- The client is the email program the user utilizes (pine, elm, on Unix - Eudora, Outlook Express, Netscape Mail, GroupWise etc. on some PCs/Macs or LANs
- The server is the software that listens for incoming mail and deposits it in the user mailbox
- The protocol is the language the client uses to talk to the server. In the case of Internet for sending mail the protocol is SMTP - Simple Mail Transport Protocol.
