Multimedia Storage Considerations

• Each second of sound requires about 150,000 bits of storage

• 8x11 monochrome image requires about 50-100,000 bits of storage

• Normal video displays = 30 frames/sec.

• Color adds SIGNIFICANTLY to the storage requirements

• Compression algorithms/standards:

  • MPEG -- for compressing video
  • JPEG -- for compressing images
