• Addresses

  • 4-byte numeric addresses; range provided by InterNIC or ISP (e.g. 152.2.81.1) [see http://www.internic.net]

• Names

  • all numeric IP addresses must have a registered name associated with them; concept of “Domain Name Server” (e.g. ruby.ils.unc.edu)

• Routers

  • hardware device that provides physical connection to “the Internet”; concept of “default router”
