PROGRAM PRESENTATION

Appendix V: FACULTY CITATION STUDY

A citation analysis study was conducted in the first two weeks of June 1999 at the School of Information and Library Science (SILS), University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The study was intended to examine the impact of SILS research community on others. Five groups of SILS faculty and/or instructors were included in the study:
  1. Full-time SILS faculty (assistant professors, associate professors, and professors);
  2. Special appointments;
  3. Adjunct appointments;
  4. Visiting appointments; and
  5. Summer appointments.

Members of the first two groups were limited to faculty who are currently teaching or conducting research at SILS. Members of groups 3, 4, and 5 were limited to those part-time faculty and/or instructors who are teaching now or have taught at SILS in the last five years. The names of all members of all groups were provided by SILS.

To compile as many citations obtained by the study participants as possible, data was collected from three different databases using DIALOG:

  1. Arts and Humanities Citation Index (1980-May 1999),
  2. Science Citation Index (1974-May 1999), and
  3. Social Sciences Citation Index (1972-May 1999).

Citations for (and/or references to) the names of the participants with all their possible name variations were compiled and duplicates were removed.

Many of the study participants had relatively more common names than others. For these participants, lists of publications were collected and were used to compile their citations. All names, whether common or unique, were searched both with and without using middle initials. Both "cited author" and "cited reference" searching capabilities were utilized. The "cited reference" searching function was also used to determine the works that were cited at least 10 times. The latter were termed "Distinguished Papers." A separate list of these works was created.

The citation study was revealing but also somewhat misleading. A number of SILS faculty have published monograph literature which are not indexed by the indexes used; others have published in European and other international journals which often are not indexed; and some have presented refereed papers at conferences that are not included here. Despite these limitations, the results show that many faculty publications are widely cited.

Below is a summary table of the faculty citations:
