Of the 56 students who responded, 38 said they had NOT received career advising and 18 indicated that they had -- from faculty (13), staff (2), peers (9), career counseling center (7), a UNC librarian (1) and the School's job list (1).The following comments about the strengths of career advising include:
- Career Counseling Center useful -- 1 IS, 2 LS
- On-campus literature - 1 IS, 2 LS
- Helpful feedback on resume -- 2 IS
- Advice and information available -- 2 IS
- Faculty and peers with real work experience - 1 LS
- Many levels of access - 1 LS
- Faculty available to talk - 1 LS
- School's Career Fair - 1 IS
- Knowledge of Jobs and their requirements - 1 LS
Dr. Haas in the School and Melanie Sinche from the Career Counseling Center were mentioned as particularly helpful.
Two people (1 IS, 1 LS) said they have had no time to use career advising but had heard it was good; one (IS) said, "other people can't decide for me."
The following comments on the weaknesses of career advising were received:
- Doesn't exist -5 LS
- Kind of hit or miss/Not visible/Not much emphasis - 2 IS, 2 LS
- Never enough information/Up to student to initiate - 2 LS
- Career Services doesn't know about ILS - 1 IS, 1 LS
- Career Fair was horrible - only 2 non-NC employers - 1 LS
- Little emphasis on job placement help - 1 LS
- Little focus or direction for IS track options - 1 IS
- Would like better idea of career options - not addressed anywhere - 1 LS
