CARNIVOROUS PLANT GARDEN

The Southeastern United States supports on the highest diversities of carnivorous plants in the world. The Carnivorous Plant Garden is situated in a cleared area that will provide the sunny orientation required for culture of these plants.

Carnivorous plants specialize in capturing and digesting insects and other "bugs." The most well known of these is the Venus fly trap which often catches ants, spiders and beetles but is seldom quick enough to capture a fly.

Other carnivorous plants include pitcher plants, sundews, butterworts, and bladderworts. Researchers believe these different plants have all evolved the capapcity of catch "bugs" because of a common environmental factor--a soil which is very low in nutrients.

Nearby are the Greenhouses used for propogation of native plants and herbs and winter display of carnivorous plants. The plastic house, not open to the public, is used for research being conducted by professors and students at UNC.
