William Lanier Hunt Arboretum
Beginning in 1961, William Lanier Hunt donated 103 acres of dramatic
Morgan Creek gorge to protect several beautiful rhododendron bluffs and
to begin a collection of southeastern woody plants. Today this
tract is called the William Lanier Hunt Arboretum. The purpose of
the Hunt Arboretum is to protect natural areas and display a world-class
collection of the diverse woody plants of the Southeastern United
States.
In keeping with the Garden's commitment to conservation, the Hunt
Arboretum is developed with minimal disturbance of the existing
environment. Trails have been sited to take advantage of significant
natural and cultural resources as well as to minimize clearing for new
trail construction. The 50 acre, previously undisturbed, bottomland along
Morgan Creek is the site of most intensive development of the woody plant
collection.
