Please read the following article written by a Ph.D. graduate of the school now teaching in Kentucky:
Shannon, Donna M., "Effective Teacher Behaviors in Higher Education and in LIS Education Programs: A Review of the Literature," Journal of Education for Library and Information Science 39(3) (Summer 1998): 163-174.
This article discusses the research literature on effective teaching behaviors. Donna distinguishes between high-inference characteristics, e.g., attributes or traits such as flexibility, enthusiasm, clarity, and low-inference characteristics, e.g. specific behaviors such as "gives multiple examples" and "praises students for good ideas." The latter are more helpful to the individual instructor seeking improvement. She also describes the most prevalent research paradigm ("process-product studies"), its strengths and weaknesses. Three models for improving college instruction are included. I think it will be a good stimulus for our discussion on the 14th.
