Assignment #4: Designing a Knowledge Management System
Due: Apr. 19
Background. This will be an individual rather than group assignment. Design a first-generation knowledge management system for your library. You may choose either the library from your group assingments or from Assignment #1.
Use your study of the organization to determine what types of knowledge exist and would be useful to your clientele and what type of technology would be most useful (and comfortable!) for them. Don't make this too hard; it can be a simple, but elegant, system!
Presentation. Prepare a proposal explaining what your knowledge management system is to accomplish and how. You should address the following:
Your proposal will probably run 4-6 pages and may include additional material such as charts or screen design sketches. Be creative.
- Who the participants are, both in the contribution and the collection of knowledge. What are the incentives to participate?
- How it will be organized, including format, type of file structure, fields to be included, etc.
- How it will be accessed, including screen design, access points, security restrictions, other applicable options.
- Plans for maintenance, who will update, how and how often? How will it interact with other ongoing systems? How will new sources of knowledge be identified?
- Marketing plans for making your users aware of the system and helping them to make the best use of it.
