INLS 247: SPECIAL LIBRARIES AND KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT

Assignment #5: Issues Paper or Proposal

Paper/Proposal: due May 4.

Overview. This is an individual assignment and is in lieu of a final exam. You have two options for this assignment.

Option #1. Prepare a paper between 1500 and 3000 words (about 8-12 doublespaced pages) suitable for publication on one of the management issues addressed in class this semester or in response to one of the questions on SLA's Research Agenda. Follow the editorial guidelines for authors from either

Ignore the mechanical guidelines. Write the type of article you would expect to see in either of these two publications.

Either or both of the following two outlets for student papers will be eager to receive your paper (as will I). Check out

[Note: We especially encourage SILS students to submit a paper to the Sara Aull competition which calls for papers each January. The winner receives a nice monetary award ($200) plus recognition by the NC/SLA chapter. You can submit your paper even after your graduate as long as it's within a year.]

Option #2. Instead of writing a paper, you may submit a research proposal. See SLA's research agenda and SLA's research guidelines. For this option, you do not have to complete items 6-9 of the proposal format. In other words, state the problem, provide a little background (a brief literature review), state a goal and some objectives for your proposed study, outline your methodology (include a time line and indicate who would do the work and what would be done), and indicate why your proposed study is significant and worth supporting.

If you choose this option, your paper will probably be between 5-7 pages.
