Academic Library Professional Associations

Association of College and Research Libraries. Information Literacy.
A gateway site for resources on information literacy for the higher education community. Much to examine here in particular the Institute for Information Literacy. Standards and guidelines plus inks to other organizations with similar interests. One interesting feature from the ALA-ACRL section is from the Emerging Technologies in Instruction Committee, a quarterly compilation of responses to the ILI-L listserv related to the impact of technology on instruction called InfoTech Tips and Trends. The April 2005 topic was "Clicker Culture." Another website, called PRIMO: Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online, selects a library site to showcase technology and materials development.

American Library Association. Library Instruction Round Table

ALA's section on library instruction represents all types of libraries and supports library instruction as an essential service for every library. The site includes some useful links to information on designing tutorials and some nice teaching tips. Lists of the "Top 20 Instruction Articles" are provided annually -- most recently for 2003; there's also a "top of the top" list. Some sample instruments for evaluating library instruction.

LOEX [Library Orientation Exchange]. Clearinghouse for Library Instruction

Another rich site with excellent links to teaching and support resources (tutorials, tours, and more) and direct access to copyright-free materials related to all aspects of library instruction donated by libraries and librarians. See the Instruction Links from the old website -- not sure how much is duplicated in the new site.

Information Literacy Listserv - ILI-L

Instructions on how to subscribe to the list. A bit of history of the list and its predecessor. Searchable archive.

Teaching and Instructional Design

Big Dog and Little Dog
A site developed by Don Clark, consultant, that is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. This takes you to a map that includes links to all the topics of interest to us in the course including a complete instructional systems design manual Big Dog's ISD Page). The frosting on the cake are the great pictures of Don's two dogs.

LibraryInstruction.Com; The Librarian's Weapon of Mass Instruction
Contains lesson plans, articles on library instruction, bibliography and links, plus materials on information literacy.

UNC. Center for Teaching and Learning
It will be worthwhile to check out this site, especially the publications . The For Your Consideration short pieces are good; of particular value to this class are the following:
  • Evaluating Student Projects. Some good assessment methods here.
  • The Guided Discussion. Good ideas on ways to ask questions to elicit a good discussion.
  • Planning, Designing, and Evaluating Student Assignments. Has some nice examplar criteria standards.

Teaching for Inclusion has some useful ideas on diversity.

Model Tutorials - Lessons -- Other Examples

NOTE: I used to maintain a list of library tutorials but they change frequently and other folks have started to provide tutorial lists so I'll just note a few of these and assume you will find others if you need them for comparison purposes.
