Association of College and Research Libraries. Instruction Section.
Intent of the site is "... to enhance the ability of academic and research librarians involved in bibliographic instruction to serve effectively the library and information needs of current and potential library users." Note particularly the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education approved Jan. 18, 2000. The Dudley Award for 2000 went to Carol Kuhlthau, a name you should be familiar with (see a reading by her on reading list). Directions to subscribe to a number of other possibly relevant listservs in addition to BI-L are linked from this page.

ALA. Library Instruction Round Table

ALA's section on library instruction represents all types of libraries and supports library instruction as an essential service. Useful links to library instruction tutorials. Lists of the "Top 20 Instruction Articles" annually. The LIRT Web Standards and Guidelines provide useful guidelines. Can subscribe to lirt-l from directions here.

LOEX. Clearinghouse for Library Instruction

Copyright-free materials related to all aspects of library instruction donated by libraries and librarians. See Instruction Links for featured web sites, sample assignments and syllabi, teaching tips, virtual tours, tutorials, and the like. Some useful material for international students. A large print collection is maintained at Eastern Michigan Univ. and can be borrowed by member libraries/ians.

Guidelines for Program Design, Human Resources, and Support. Useful as leverage to use with administrators.

Model Statement of Objectives for Academic Bibliographic Instruction
This is the old 1987 statement, still contains some useful material. Some folks still prefer it. You might want to compare the last two.

Teaching and Instructional Design

It will be worthwhile to check out this site, especially the serial publication, For Your Consideration. Of particular value to this class are the following:
  • FYC 9: Evaluating Student Projects. Some good assessment methods here.
  • FYC 12: The Guided Discussion. Good for ideas on ways to ask questions to elicit a good discussion.
  • FYC 18: Planning, Designing, and Evaluating Student Assignments. Has some nice examplar criteria standards.

The Diversity in the College Classroom report is valuable as well.

UC Berkeley -- The Teaching Library

Univ. of Calif. INFOMINE

A librarian-built resource "intended for the introduction and use of Internet/Web resources of relevance to faculty, students, and research staff at the university level. It is being offered as a comprehensive showcase, virtual library and reference tool containing highly useful Internet/Web resources including databases, electronic journals, electronic books, bulletin boards, listservs, online library card catalogs, articles and directories of researchers, among many other types of information."

CalPoly (CSU) Information Competence Project

A project completed in March 1999 but with a few things added since that time. Includes a good collection of tutorials and a page of other "information competence" sites on the web and a list of other online tutorials. check them out; it's a good resource.

Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis

Information Literacy at FIU (Florida International University)

Interesting description of an electronic classroom, "The Information Arcade," and policies for using it.

Purdue University Libraries; The Online Resource (THOR).

See Resource Tutorial called CORE, Comprehensive Online Research Education, whose purpose is to support information literacy education on campus. Good summary of curriculum objectives. Look at Navigation Chart. A related site from Purdue Librarian Scott Brandt, who styles himself "techman", provides a selected list of tutorials on use of Internet.

Nice set of online library guides.

Queen's University (Ontario) Stauffer Library, "Library Instruction on the Web,"
A site designed to provide librarians with an overview of Web design for library instruction. Unfortunately it's last revision date is May 1997 so examine with this in mind.

Internet Navigator -- Utah's Multi-institutional Internet Course
Part of an effort by the Utah Academic Consortium and a Health Sciences Library intended, among other things, to create a "collaborative interactive learning environment that eliminates time, distance and location barriers."

"Tutorials Online," J.W. Holmes, University of Washington.
An annotated list of academic library tutorials. Seems thorough and up-to-date.
