READING COMMENTARIES

Summer 2005

DESCRIPTION |  SYLLABUS |  ASSIGNMENTS |  SCHEDULE  |  RESOURCES |

Due Dates: Five commentaries to be posted at various times throughout the course particularly during the period May 25 to June 13. Last posting can be as late as June 20 but please do not leave more than one to the end. You should have posted at least two of your commentaries by June 1.

Selection of Items to Read. Ideally you would select one book from the reading list (or your own choice if you run it by me first), one website, an issue of one journal, an article, and one tutorial. Within the first few days of class, I will ask you to send me an email with your selected items.

Reading Activity. For the book, please read the preface, examine the table of contents, skim through the book, and pick one chapter to read. For the website, do something similar, getting a sense of how the site is organized and how people navigate through it; select one element for more thorough examination. For the journal, pick one of the journals from the list on the syllabus (or suggest an alternative), look over several of the most recent issues and pick one for closer examination reviewing the articles, columns and other features and then picking one article for closer reading. The article is straightforward. Select a topic of particular interest to you and relevant to the class and report on your selected article. For the tutorial, find one of interest to you (perhaps from the list and/or one that might be similar to something you would like to do) and work through the tutorial.

Analysis and Write-Up. The write-ups will be of varying length depending on the item chosen. For each one plan to give us an overview of the item and then follow that with some analysis and critical reflection about it. Provide an evaluative comment considering its potentital usefulness to you.

Posting. Post your commentaries on the discussion forum labeled "Readings." Plan to read at least one of the postings from each of your colleagues in the class and post responses.
