Academic Library Education Programs

Univ. of Calif. At Riverside Library

Bellevue Regional Public Library, Bellevue, Washington. NOTE: This is the program that Karin Thomsen sent us a message about on the bulletin board and the one for which she plans to develop a new course on Health Reference Services for older adults. The page with the class schedule and class descriptions is at http://www.kcls.org/brl/bellprog1.html.

Bibliographic Instruction in the Biological Sciences. This is the web site from Wooster College, Ohio, containing so much useful information both for undergraduate science majors as well as other undergraduates that Taneya found and presented to us.

Cornell University. Uris Library.

Univ. of Iowa Libraries' Web Page

NCSU's Tools for Teachers: Course and Web Page Generators. One of the items cited in the article that Sophia Stone left us when she described the training program at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Lots of other interesting NCSU training sites as well.

Ohio State University Library

Purdue University Libraries; The Online Resource. This was cited in the Brandt article ("Tutorial or Not Tutorial" in Computers in Libraries (May97) handed out in class). Look at Brandt's home site for his select collection of 17 (out of 500 examined) tutorials on use of Internet at /tuturls.html and his bibliography on constructionism (mapping knowledge to change mental models and teaching the use of technology, esp. Internet-related stuff) at /conbib.html.

Learning on the Web 1998

CIT INFOBITS. This is the new electronic service offered by the Center for Instructional Technology here at UNC. This month's issue includes some resources on return on investment in training and development programs, some information about CAUSE and Educom (2 academic associations that have recently merged dealing with information technology and education issues for academic campus. Note: Janet Tysinger referred to this publication in her presentation. I assume the last section of the address will changes from month to month, e.g., bitaug98.html or bitsep98.html, etc.

UNC. Academic Technology and Networks. Instructional Services.

Computer-Based Training (CBI)

UNC. Center for Teaching and Learning It will be worthwhile to check out this site, especially the serial publication, For Your Consideration. Of particular value to this class are the following:

  • FYC 9: Evaluating Student Projects. Some good assessment methods here.
  • FYC 12: The Guided Discussion. Good for ideas on ways to ask questions to elicit a good discussion.
  • FYC 18: Planning, Designing, and Evaluating Student Assignments. Has some nice examplar criteria standards.

On the Horizon (Online journal devoted to online education)

Training; an online journal for instructional trainers in the corporate world. It is sponsored by Asymetrix Learning Systems and connected to an OnLine Learning '98 Conference described at the site.

"30 Things We Know for Sure about Adult Learning," by Ron and Susan Zemke, Innovation Abastracts 7/8 (March 9, 1984). A very nice collection of research findings discovered by Jennie Shi for one her readings.
