Class Participation

At a minimum, class participation means attending all classes, having completing all readings and other assignments due, ready to participate in the discussion. Some people are more comfortable in speaking in class; others participate by facial expression and body language. Both are valued, although I hope we can encourage some of the quieter folks to make a contribution now and again.

When you do speak in class, please direct your comments to other members of the class and not just to the instructor. If you are accustomed to speaking freely, hold back occasionally in order to encourage your less vocal colleagues. The goal is to make class discussions an all-inclusive activity.

Listserv Information. A listserv has been created for this course. Please subscribe to it by following directions for subscribing to a listserv on the UNC Web Interface List Processing page for subscribing. The name of the listserv is INLS180.

The listserv subscription is necessary in order to receive notification of postings to the Forum. I (and you as well) will use it to post messages to the class as a whole.

Discussion Forum. [NOTE: These links have been erased. 8/15/97] Each group should sign up for one of the dates and topics below: (A signup sheet will be posted outside my office)

Question Preparation. To prepare your questions, read the material scheduled for that week (both Tuesday's and Thursday's class). Meet as a group (or use email for virtual group meeting) and agree on 3-4 key questions. (You may also want to have one or two back-up questions) Meet with me on the question due date for a few minutes at the end of the class to discuss/negotiate the questions you have selected.

List Monitoring. Monitor the list during the week the questions are posted and respond as necessary.

Participation in Discussion Forum. During the weeks when you are not preparing questions and monitoring the discussion forum, you have the responsibility to participate in the forum. I will expect at least one contribution from each person in the class for each discussion forum.

You will receive a group grade weighted at 10% for the questions and your efforts in monitoring the discussion during your week. You will receive an individual grade weighted at 10% of your final grade for the quality of the individual comments you provide to the discussion forum. Your comments should be based on the readings for the class plus your past experience and common sense (an uncommon commodity).

Group Case Analysis. As with the discussion forum assignment, your group must agree on a date and case for analysis, presentation and discussion with the class. The cases come from the Fisher text. We will do the Luxor case from Chapter 1 in class to act as a model for you.

Please select a date and case from the list below: (Note: There are 8 groups and 9 possibilities provided)

Prepare the case focusing on aspects of communication and information transfer. It will be useful to do the assigned readings in addition to the text reading before beginning your analysis; there may be a model or theory discussed in the readings that can be used as a framework to analyze the issue(s). Discuss with members of your group what you see as appropriate/inappropriate behavior and suggest alternative methods of communicating. Identify some discussion questions arising from the case to pose to your classmates and be prepared to lead the discussion on these points.

I will like to meet with you as a group to review your plans prior to the date of presentation. For the presentation, plan to spend between 10-20 minutes in presenting and discussing the case with members of the class. I will reserve the right to call time after 20 minutes.

There is no written requirement for this assignment. All individuals in the group will receive the same grade unless there is overwhelming evidence why it should be otherwise.

Written Case Analyses and/or Short Exercises. This is an individual assignment using case material and exercises given at the end of each chapter. You are to complete some combination of three written case analyses and exercises. Choice of case or exercise is up to you and may come from any chapter in the text. Assignments may be turned in any time but must be turned in by or before the last class.

Two of the analyses/exercises will count 5% each and your best one will count 10%. In addition, you may choose to submit a fourth exercise/analysis if you wish and I will drop the one with the lowest grade in calculating your final grade.
