Getting Ready for Class of Sept. 20, 1999

CASE STUDY:
AMERICAN MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS:
THE KNOWLEDGE CENTERS
(Continued)

We will continue to analyze the AMS case looking more closely in this session on management activities and skills. This will involve re-reading the case and examing the role of key individuals in AMS.

How does each individual's role in the organization affect the issues that claim their attention and their bias toward certain solutions? Pick one of these individuals and try on the role. How would you act if you were in this position? Do you agree with the issues that this individual has selected as important? Are there other issues that you think are important for him/her to address? What would you do next?

Select either the Organizational Development and Change Management Knowledge Center (probably more compatible with LS folks) or the Engagement and Project Management Knowledge Center (probably more compatible with IS folks) and reflect on the issues and challenges of the area.

Now put yourself in the position of a would-be associate from one of AMS' business units thinking about a Knowledge Center project. What kind of project might interest you in this environment?

What are the "lessons learned" from the analysis of this case that might transfer to a library or systems environment?

It isn't necessary to answer each of these questions. Pick and choose as you organize your notes from the class. You may select another aspect of the case you would like to write about. I offer these only as suggestions.
