Getting Ready for Class of Nov. 1, 1999

CONFLICT AND NEGOTIATION

This session is an important one. Most people prefer to avoid conflict if possible. I hope our readings, discussion and exercise will persuade you that there are better strategies of managing conflict than avoidance, at least for most situations. I have selected a chapter from a textbook that I like. It includes a short case study/role play that we can do in class and will do on Monday. The reading is:
David A. Kolb, Joyce S. Osland and Irwin M. Rubin, "Inter-Group Conflict and Negotiation," Chapter 11 (pp. 278-302) of Organizational Behavior; An Experiential Approach. 6th ed. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, 1995.
Discussion questions are built into the exercise. Of course, in addition to the questions posed, I'd like you to consider applications to the LIS field.
