ASSIGNMENT 6:

BUDGET FOR PROPOSAL

11/19/96

Overview. Your budget for the proposal should be presented in three parts: (1)the budget itself, (2)a justification/explanation for each item in the budget, and (3)an indication of how you would reduce the scope of your project if grant funds are not available in the amount you have calculated for your budget.

The Budget. Develop a line item budget for your proposal. Group the items into major categories, e.g., Personnel, Furnishings and Equipment, Operating Expenses (Note: The "e.g." is example only; your categories might be different). Number the items in your budget to make it easier to refer to them for your justification/explanations. If you wish to show cost sharing show the amounts in a second column and add a Total column. If you wish to add an overhead percentage, exclude furnishing and equipment from your calculation of the amount. (Please note: The latter two possibilities are optional)

Justification/Explanation. For each item in your budget, provide a reason why funds are needed. For people, indicate what kind of work they will be doing, why it requires the particular wage level and how you have estimated the amount of time required. For equipment and/or furnishings, indicate how it will be used and how you estimated the amount requested. For operating expenses, indicate the same kinds of information for each item -- why it's needed, how you estimated the amount and the cost.

Use the worksheet questions provided on the Concept assignment as well as Chapter 12 of Miner & Griffith to make sure you are including all the necessary expenses.

Plans for Budget Adjustment. In this section, indicate how you might reduce the scope of your project if grant funds are less than your total estimate of costs. Show the reduction both in the activities and in the budget for those activities.
