Getting Ready for Class of Oct. 6, 1999

CAREER PLANNING AND HR PLANNING

Today we are fortunate to have as guest speaker the Director of Academic Affairs Libraries for UNC-CH and Associate Provost for University Libraries, Joe Hewitt. Joe holds a faculty appointment in SILS and has worked with us very closely over the years. He used to teach a Technical Services Administration class every year until he assumed his administrative responsibilities precluded it. He continues to work with the School, often serving on doctoral dissertation committees. He edited and provided many articles for Advances in Library Automation and Networking. I've asked Joe to talk about "Planning a Career in Academic Librarianship."

In preparation for his coming, please go to: and examine the site.

I also have one reading for you that we will not discuss in class but will be useful for you to pull out again later when we discuss staffing. The citation is:

Bryson, Jo, "Human resource planning," Chapter 5 (pp. 54-73) of Managing Information Services: an Integrated Approach. Aldershot, England: Gower, 1997.
  1. How do the planning suggestions in this more specific planning area relate to the material you've already read about planning?

  2. Joe Hewitt will be talking to us about career planning -- the other side of the coin from the organization's human resource planning activites. How do the two relate?

  3. What specific tips or insights did you take from Dr. Hewitt's remarks?
