Assignment 9

Based on your choices submitted via Assignment 7, you will each be assigned to a single Visual Analytics research article for presentation. In the coming weeks, each student will be asked to stand in front of the class, present the details of her/his assigned paper, and answer questions from the audience.

Presenting a research article in this format requires more than just a surface understanding. You'll need to dig deep into the content of the paper. You'll need to (a) learn enough about what the authors have written to (b) prepare a presentation outlining the details of the contribution. You'll then need to (c) stand in front of your classmates---who will not have read the paper in advance---and lecture them on the material, and (d) answer follow-up questions from your audience.

Presentation Timing and Format

Your should plan a presentation that lasts roughly 8 minutes (including Q&A). Plan for 6 minutes to present, plus 2 minute for questions.

You should prepare slides to use as visual aids for your presentation. These can be authored in PowerPoint, Keynote, or any other software package. The specific tool to use is up to you. However, the slides should be well organized, coherent, and directly support your overall presentation.

Your talk should include contextual information to help students understand a paper's place in the literature. For example, it would be typically be valuable in your presentation to include a brief discussion of related work.

Submission

Create a PDF version of your supporting material (e.g., PowerPoint slides) and submit them to "Assignment 9" in Sakai by the start of class on the day that you will present.
