A consideration of the different roles art plays in the public library's collaborative space

Why?

The arts play what many consider to be vital role in our ability to communicate a broad spectrum of ideas to all people.

Developing an understanding and appreciation of visual and performing arts promotes artistic literacy – and other forms of literacy depending on mediums being used. Libraries should offer opportunities for the community to experience art, especially because it can serve different functions for things like expression, communication, growth, etc.

This week, we will be focusing on what I am fondly calling The generality of art within the library>, because there will be a few different things discussed in this topic.

Reading to prepare yourselves for the session

You don't have to read all of them, but read at least one and make a forum post for it.

Also consider an additional, completely optional and fun thing - add a picture to your post that includes one of your favorite art pieces - or art you have seen in a library.

Questions to consider for discussion or reflections

  1. What programs, etc. have you seen that involve art with your public library?
  2. Is there anything about this that you find surprising/interesting?
  3. Who do you think would use/benefit from art resources that libraries are offering?
  4. What kind of partnerships/collaborations do you see the library engaging in that use art?
  5. What ways do you see libraries working with art to help build a sense/feeling of community?

We'll spend some time discussing these readings in light of current perceptions and realities.

Guest speaker

We will be joined by the Director of the Catawba County, NC, Library.

They will be able to discuss with us the challenges of running mid-sized county system, as well as about how to run one's own branch library.
