What the SILS Faculty Upholds (myself wholeheartedly included)In support of the University's diversity goals and the mission of the School of Information and Library Science, SILS embraces diversity as an ethical and societal value. We broadly define diversity to include race, gender, national origin, ethnicity, religion, social class, age, sexual orientation and physical and learning ability. As an academic community committed to preparing our graduates to be leaders in an increasingly multicultural and global society we strive to:
The statement represents a commitment of resources to the development and maintenance of an academic environment that is open, representative, reflective and committed to the concepts of equity and fairness. Our Anti-Racist Aspirations SILS has made a commitment to discover, account, take responsibility, and actively eliminate racist attitudes and artifacts that diminish us all. Personally, I'd like to reach out to those of other cultures who have experience with manifold other forms of racism. I hope you will be patient and supportive of us Americans who have a particular responsibility to redress centuries of a pernicious form of racism that grew out of the Atlantic slave trade and is still cruelly, systematically directed against Black people. Like every country, we have other forms of racism to account for, but this is our moment to understand and address this critical crime. I hope you will support us all in these difficult times.
