Assignment 3

Your team has been formed and you've chosen a project proposal. Now the real work for your semester project begins.

In the early stages of your project, you'll need to work out a number of important details. You'll need to coordinate your team, assign roles to team members, and begin your work. You'll need to look more closely at the available data and refine the proposed goals of your software project based on what you find. You'll need to develop a detailed design plan and a schedule for completing the work. And of course, you'll need to start coding! This assignment serves as a "checkpoint" for your team, allowing you (and me) to judge how well you are progressing as a group.

Your team will submit two documents: a status report and a revised proposal. You'll also need to make a presentation. This is a group project. Only one team member needs to submit your documents by the due date.

Status Report

Your status report should include:

You can use any format you wish for the status report as long as the items listed above are included. There are no length restrictions for this document.

Revised Proposal

This assignment is due roughly one month after your team was formed. By now, you should have learned much more about the proposed work, the available data, and your team's skills/interests. Your team has also, hopefully, started some of the technical work (e.g., coding, data acquisition/cleaning).

Your team should prepare a revised and expanded proposal that reflects this additional information and planning. It should follow the same format and outline as your original proposal. However, the length limit is now 5 pages, allowing your team to use up to 3 additional pages. Generally speaking, I expect that the additional space will be used to provide more detailed information about both data and functionality (including UI sketches and software design).

Class Presentations: "Project Midterms"

In addition to preparing the written proposal revision and status report, each team will give a brief presentation to the class on this assignment's due date. The presentation should include an overview of the content from both your revised proposal and status report.

The presentation should take between 5 and 10 minutes per team. Given the short duration, you should choose one person from your team to be the presenter.

Please note: This should be a formal presentation. Your team should use slides while presenting and be prepared to answer questions from the class.

Submission

Save both your status report and revised proposal as PDF documents. Submit both PDFs via "Assignment 3" in Sakai. Only one person on your team should submit these documents.

Your documents must be in Sakai by the time class starts on the due date listed on the class schedule.
