Assignment 7

Toward the end of the semester, you'll be asked to present the details of a published Visual Analytics research paper to your fellow students. That presentation is described in Assignment 9. However, first you'll need to select the paper that you plan to present. Your task in this assignment is to browse the Visual Analytics literature to find a paper that (a) covers a topic that interests you, and (b) is one that you will be comfortable presenting to the class.

It is important to note that presenting a research paper requires more than just a surface understanding. You'll need to dig deep into the content of the paper, understand what the authors have written, and prepare a summary presentation (~10 minutes) through which you can teach your classmates. Keep this in mind as you choose your paper.

Choosing Two Papers

You need to browser the visual analytics literature and select two papers that you would be comfortable presenting. One will be your "first choice" paper, and the other will be a backup in case another student chooses the same one to present.

Be sure to skim the full paper before you select it for your presentation. Don't judge a paper by its title, or even its abstract! This will also help make sure that you have access to the full text of the paper via the UNC library before you make a selection.

Also note that the paper must be at least 8 pages long. There are some publications you may find that are just 2 pages. Those are not allowed for this assignment. You must select a full-length paper of at least 8 pages.

Where to Look

The best place to look for Visual Analytics papers is in the proceedings of the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Conference (also known as IEEE VAST). VAST is part of the annual IEEE VIS conference.

Any full length (at least 8 pages) paper you find via the instructions is an acceptable choice for this assignment. You can, however, look more broadly using tools such as Google Scholar or the UNC Library. You will be able to find relevant papers published in a variety of venues. However, you need my approval to submit such a paper as your choice. See the red box below.

If you intend to select a paper found outside of IEEE VAST, you must ask for permission via email (gotz@unc.edu) at least 2 days prior to the due date for this assignment.

Submission

Create a document with the full citations for both your first and second choice papers. Submit that document as a PDF to "Assignment 7" in Sakai.

Your choices must be submitted to Sakai by the time class starts on the due date listed on the class schedule.
