ChallengeFest Tournament Winners!!!

The Triangle United U9 boys Palermo Daredevils had an exciting if muddy ChallengeFest 2005 tournament.  Hurricane Isabel was dumping rain on North Carolina.  Winston Salem, which had been mostly spared, was getting soaked when the games started Saturday morning.  Our first game was against the Twins White, and by half-time we were up 4-1 and excited.  Unluckily, that first half of our first game was the only time we had nice fields.  After that it wet, muddy, and slow soccer.  We survived a comeback by the Twins White to hang onto to 5-4 victory.   In the second game we played the Blue Ice team in a hard fought game.  We were down early after having our offensive third containing more mud than grass.  We kicked one ball that was clearly by their goalie but landed and came to a complete stop on the goal line in a mud puddle.  Their goalie slogged over and picked it up--no goal :-(.  We were down 2-1 but had the good side in the second half, and managed about 20 shots on goal but had to settle for a 2-2 tie in the end.  We were pleased by the tournament's decision to play all the games, but everyone did have to play shortened halfs (all teams played 20 minute halves) to minimize damage to the fields.  Our third game was against the WOW Explosion and our boys were excited because they had begun to belive they might make the playoffs.  The boys played hard, scoring twice in the first two minutes, and coasted to a 4-2 victory, earning us a trip to the finals against none other than our sister team, the Triangle United U9B Arsenal who had won all their games.  It was certainly an accomplishment for both U9 teams to win their U10 brackets and make the finals, and they came out playing hard despite the conditions.  The game was well fought the entire time, with the Daredevils coming back to tie the Arsenal at 2-2 before regulation time ended.   All the final games went straight to PKs, and the shoot-out was a thriller for the boys (their first) but heart-stopping for the coaches and parents.   It went right down to the wire, with the Daredevils winning 4-3 when the Arsenal missed their last kick.  What a great first tournament experience for our young team!!
