Introduction
This pathfinder was created out of personal interest and past experience in the area of 17th century literature written by women. The literary canon of works taught in courses about British and American literature typically excludes women. Currently there is a wealth of information available about the women who wrote and critical study of their works. This pathfinder includes cultural and social context for women writing in the 17th century, general collections of various works by an assortment of women, collections of critical essays about the works, biographical information about women writers, and more. Margaret Cavendish is one prolific and well-known writer, for whom I provide more comprehensive sources. Cavendish is a fascinating character in literary history, whose life and works are engaging to explore. The pathfinder focuses more on drama than other genres such as poetry or religious writings. One ulterior motive of this pathfinder is to lead the user to the dramatic works written by 17th century women, and to encourage the user to explore the possibilities of performance.
Scope
This pathfinder has been designed for academic use by college students, advanced high school students, or anyone with a particular interest in this area. The pathfinder includes materials about 17th century British women writers, and more specific information about Margaret Cavendish. All of the resources listed include a call number, and can be found on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus in Davis Library. Duke's Perkins Library has an excellent collection of material by and about Margaret Cavendish, as well as other general and author-specific materials on 17th century British women writers, but holdings are not listed here.
