Syntactic Wordclass Tagging
edited by
Hans van Halteren
Dept. of Language and Speech
University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands
This book provides an in-depth discussion of the field of syntactic
wordclass tagging, i.e. the annotation of the words in a text with tags
indicating their syntactic properties. Represented are the viewpoints of
the two main groups who take an interest in tagging: the users of tagged
text and the developers of tagging software.
The book starts out by examining the field foremost from the user's point
of view. After a brief historical overview, the nature and uses of tagging
are discussed and current practice is described. Here the user will find
what tagging is and the software developer what it is the user wants.
The book then switches to the other point of view and continues with a
detailed explanation of the most common computational techniques for
automatically tagging large amounts of text. Here the software developer
finds information needed for the implementation of a tagger while the user
gains insight into the possibilities and impossibilities of automatic
tagging and how computer-provided tags should be interpreted.

Re: Press Release: "GL-Compendium"
PRESS RELEASE
PRESSEINFORMATION
COMMUNIQUE DE PRESSE
Amsterdam, 17 September 1999
G L - C o m p e n d i u m
A Netbased Directory of Grey Literature Collections
On September 1st 1999, the European Association for Grey Literature
Exploitation (EAGLE), signed an agreement with GreyNet, Grey Literature
Network Service for permission to use their SIGLE Subject Classification
Scheme within the GL-Compendium Project. The agreement was signed by Dr.
David Wood, President of EAGLE and Mr. Andrew Smith, Chair of the
EAGLE Technical Committee.
"The Association looks forward to the opportunities which
this venture may present for further raising awareness
about EAGLE and SIGLE (System for Information on Grey
Literature in Europe) and to exploring the possibilities
for developing our co-operation."
Last month, Dr. Dominic Farace, Head of GreyNet, submitted together with
MCB University Press the GL-Compendium proposal:
One of the initial problems encountered in the search for information is
finding the right source(s) to enable further searching. Internet access to
special collections of grey literature, regardless of the type of documents
or the subject areas covered, will no doubt both challenge and enable
librarians and researchers alike. The challenge to become aware of the very
existence of these collections and the subsequent ability to access them
worldwide. The GL-Compendium, a unique networked resource in and for grey
literature, will not only act to control information overflow but will, at
the same time, confront and deal with information underuse.
This grey literature netbased directory, which we call the GL Compendium,
will be multidisciplinary in scope, providing a standardised, descriptive,
hyperlinked record produced, edited, and updated electronically with the
support of state-of-the-art software and classification tools developed and
maintained specifically for scientific and technical grey literature. The
partners in this new and unique venture, as well as their roles and
responsibilities constitute the remainder of this proposal." To access the
full-text: http://www.konbib.nl/infolev/greynet/GL-Compendium.htm
At GL'99, the Fourth International Conference on Grey Literature scheduled
on 4-5 October 1999 in Washington D.C., GreyNet will provide a Product and
Service Review covering the GL-Compendium Project. Dates will be targeted
for distribution & retrieval of this Netbased Directory of Grey Literature
Collections. See, http://www.konbib.nl/infolev/greynet/GL'99.htm

OBJECTIVES
Data mining is a promising and relatively new area of current research and
development that can provide important advantages to the users. It can
yield substantial knowledge from data primarily gathered for a wide range
of quite different applications. Financial institutions have derived
considerable benefits from its application and other industries and
disciplines are now applying the methodology to increasing effect.
The second International Conference on Data Mining will provide an
international forum for the sharing of original research results and
practical development experiences among researchers and applications
developers from different areas such as computer experts, statisticians,
knowledge acquisition specialists, data analysts, IT consultants, data
visualisation experts, and users and developers in business and industry.
The Conference aims to bring together the participants from academic and
research, industry and government organisations. The meeting will allow
participants to learn about the many different applications of data mining
and how the techniques can help in their own field.
LOCATION AND DATES
The Conference will be held from 5 - 7 July 2000.
New Hall, with its established gardens and many old trees, provides a
tranquil setting with easy access from the motorway and ample parking - yet

The title, author, affiliation(s), contact details, abstract and list of
keywords should be justified and single spaced in a single column across
the width of the printable area.
The paper should include:
(a) The title: 14 pt bold type, centered over two columns, and in upper case.
(b) Authors and affiliations (incl. full address and e-mail) should all be
11 pt, centered, under the title. Authors (bold) and affiliation/contact
details (italic) should be centered. For multiple authors use a

possible to their first reference, and centered in a column or across the
page if necessary.

of the paper, before any appendices. Use 11 pt. single spaced text.
References within the text, should be in the Harvard referencing style.
