A. Answer these questions, using either the paper (Davis Reference Desk HA202.A36) or the online 2004/05 issue
of the Statistical Abstract of the United States http://www.census.gov/prod/www/statistical-abstract-04.html.

  3. There's some Gulf Coast hurricane information on this site. Relating to the U.S. oil and natural gas markets,
what's the federal offshore crude oil production from the Gulf of Mexico? What percent of the U.S. total is this?

CENSUS

D. Use the 1990 Census of Population, Social and Economic Characteristics print volumes,
shelved in Davis Reference on Row 12, HA201 1990j.
Choose any state but North Carolina. For your state, use the volume labeled "Sec. 1."
[some states may have 2 or 3 sections].
Use the "Table Finding Guide" in the introductory pages of each volume.

  1. List the state you're using.
  2. List one fact relating to Age, at the State level
  3. List one fact relating to Language spoken at home, at the State level.
  4. List one fact relating to Poverty Status, at the State level.
E. Use American Factfinder, http://factfinder.census.gov/home/saff/main.html?_lang=en
to answer these questions. (This site is sometimes very slow in the afternoon.)
  1. Click on "Data Sets" on the left, Radio button next to 2000 Summary File 1 should be checked. Click on Detailed Tables, on the right. Under "select a geographic type", select County. Select a State, then a County, then click Add. Click Next. You'll get a list of tables: Select 2 variables in the P [population] section and 2 in the H [housing] section. Then produce a table. [This may produce up to 4 different tables.] Either staple it to your worksheet answers, email as an appendix, or cut and paste to your worksheet.

  2. Go back to the Factfinder main page. On the left frame, enter a street address to find 2000 data. (Omit apartment numbers.) Select Census Tract and click on GO. For these questions, use Census 2000, Summary File 4 (SF-4) Sample data, tables.

F. For this section, use LexisNexis Statistical, on the Article Databases section of the UNC-CH Libaries Home Page. [you have access to this database off-campus also].

  1. Use the form "Search Tables Base Edition" section. I need some data on how the Internet is used in public libraries. Specifically: filtering or blocking--what percent block all workstations? some work stations? no workstations? Give me some 2002 data on this.

Use the "Abstracts" section for questions 2,3.

  2. I'm looking for some data on hamsters used in research. I heard there's an annual report on animals used in research.
List the title and SuDoc number for this.
  3. List one California state publication that would give labor statistics, broken down by county.
