OBJECTIVES

  • To acquaint future librarians and information specialists with the variety and extent of information produced
    and distributed by governments at all levels, and in all formats: print, microform, electronic, and the Internet.
  • To demonstrate the reference and research value of this information.
  • To familiarize students with the major government or commercially published bibliographical tools,
    catalogs, encyclopedias, handbooks, indexes, and web sites.
  • To show how this information is collected and organized for access in a library or information setting.
CLASSROOM
The first class will be held in 208 Manning Hall.
All other classes will be held in Room 247, Davis Library.
  When you enter Davis, go up the stairs--Room 247 is on the right side.

OFFICE HOURS
My office is Room 124, Reference Dept., Davis Library.
I'll be glad to meet with you any time I'm not on duty at the Reference Desk.
Don’t hesitate to stop by if you’re having a problem, want to discuss an assignment, etc.
You can make an appointment by phone (962-1151) or email if you'd like.
SILS publications may list an office for me in Manning Hall; I don't use that office.

My Fall 2005 Work Schedule:
Monday: 2-5; 6-10pm. [Periodically, I work only 6-10pm.]
Tuesday-Friday: 7:30am-4pm.

EMAIL
I don't use a course listserv. I will send email if there are announcements or
if I need to communicate with you between class meetings. If you use some kind of email filter,
you need to make arrangements for my email to come through to you.

ASSIGNMENTS

Turn in assignments in class, send them as attachments via email mike_vanfossen@unc.edu,
to my box in the SILS office, or my office in the Davis Reference Department.

  1. Worksheets: [45 points total]
    Worksheets will have questions relating to the print and electronic resources we discuss in class
    or are included in the readings. These will give you some practical experience using the sources.

    • Accessing information; Legislative Branch: Due Oct 5. [15 points]
          For students presenting on Oct 5, this is due Oct 12.
    • Census/Statistics: Due Nov. 16. [15 points]
    • State, IGO, and United Nations: Due Dec 15. [15 points]

  2. Executive Branch Report: Presentations Oct 5 or Oct 12. [5 points]
    Detailed guidelines for this assignment will be posted on the course webpage.
    A 10-minute oral report on an executive branch department, an independent agency or commission.
    This will include a brief demonstration of the webpage.
    There is no written report required for this assignment.
    Please email me your choice by Sept. 21.

  3. Annotated Bibliography: Due Oct 26. [25 points]
    Detailed guidelines for this assignment will be posted on the course webpage.
    An annotated bibliography of 15 U.S government sources on any topic that interests you.
    Include printed matter, CDROM's and Internet sources, as available.
    There are 2 sample bibliographies on SILS Reserve.
    Please email me your topic by October 5.

  4. Organization Report: Due Dec 14. [25 points]
    Detailed guidelines for this assignment will be posted on the course webpage.
    A 15 page report on the website of an international intergovernmental organization of your choice.
    There are 2 sample organization reports on SILS Reserve.
    Please email me your organization/state by Nov. 16.

EVALUATION
The SILS grading criteria:
  H: Clear excellence.
  P: Entirely satisfactory.
  L: Low passing.
  F: Failed.
  IN: Incomplete.

  1. Please notify me before class if you won’t be with us.
  2. You are responsible for knowing the information included in this syllabus,
    the course webpage and any emails I send.
  3. Davis Library has one copy of the printed sources used for worksheet assignments.
    Please return books you use to the shelf where you found them or to the Reference Desk;
    do not leave them laying on tables in the Reference Room or at the photocopy machines.
  4. If you can't find a copy of the printed sources used to complete worksheets, let me know right away so I can search.
