SCALA Interest Meeting Highlights

On last Tuesday at 6:15pm, SCALA officers met with some of our student members to discuss ALA and our chapter.

We began the event by eating food (ever-tasty pizza and fruit) and collecting names for our doorprize drawing. Then, SCALA officers spoke. Brian start with a description of past events hosted by our chapter and events. Megan spoke about ALA membership and benefits. Kate spoke about ALA conferences. Tammy spoke about web resources through ALA and SCALA. Finally, Brian wrapped with some final thoughts on why to join ALA and getting the most out of the experience.

The floor was opened to questions, and we had a great dialog. Three lucky students then won ALA/NCLA memberships in our drawing, while five students won other assorted prizes.

The evening ended with some casual conversations. We hope that any student member with further questions about or ideas for ALA or SCALA will contact us. It was great to meet and get to know all of our attendees.

SCALA along with SLA are bringing you a panel disucssion and recruitment opportunity on Federal Librarianship. Presenters will be:

It's the beginning of a new year,

and a new group of SILSters. We here in SCALA would like to welcome all the newcomers to Chapel Hill, the University, and of course, Manning Hall. If anyone has a question about anything, Jon, Maggie, Wake, Claire or I would love to help. Now get to studying!

I scream, you scream, we all scream. . . for ice cream socials!

The end of the semester bring a relief of no more classes, sure, there are exams, but why not push that to the back of your mind: and enjoy some ice cream. The Student Chapter of the American Library Association offered tired and wore out students ice cream with all the fixin's. Things took a small turn for disaster when the SILS freezer defrosted the ice cream*, but Maggie came to the rescue with more. Here are some images of the grand ol' time had by all.

* - Beware of the Manning/SILS refrigerator, the freezer will not keep ice cream frozen!!

She will also receive a small per diem in exchange for a total of 20 hours of work during the conference. We are excited that such a great candidate (and a terrific person) has been selected to represent us in Anaheim, and we know that it will be a great conference for everyone who attends.

This photo represents one of the 20 or so pieces which was on exhibit in Manning. We felt this was a timely project, seeing as SILS will be looking for a new home in the next few years, as the program expands in scope
