This tutorial is part of the results of the EUROSTAT SUPCOM project: Design of an Integrated Statistical Metainformation System (Contract No. 8221006). The tutorial develops a conceptual framework for statistical metadata modelling. Various approaches towards statistical metadata modelling (up to 1999) are described.

This paper is basically an updated version of chapter 1 of the Metadata Tutorial and part of the work for the METANET project of EUROSTAT. Main emphasis is on the various aspects necessary for the description of statistical objects.
