Brief notes on the IRB Process for projects. See http://www.med.unc.edu/irb/Education.htm
for overview and forms (both HTML and pdf) are available at http://research.unc.edu/ors/aairb.html. There are some sample IRB packages online at
http://www.ils.unc.edu/iimpact/IRB_samples.htm
When the package is complete, give to
Marcia Tauber in SILS Main Office.
Routing time takes about a week.
We have been discussing underlying abstractions for
basic processes in information science.
We have tried to isolate ‘information,’ ‘communication,’ and
‘information’ from the contexts in which they typically co-occur. One important context is information
seeking, where multiple interaction, communication processes and information
processes/products are coordinated as part of larger problem solving
missions. PP slides
Rogers, E. M. (1995). Diffusion of Innovations. pp 1-37. (Note: this item is on reserve in the SILS library.) (Karen Waller and Carla Valetich)
Rogers is a ‘classic’ work and you will encounter the ideas in many fields.
Pool, I. D. S. (1973). Communication systems. pp 3-36. (Betsy Spackman and
Sarah Snow)
Pool provides an abstract model for communication
systems—defining the components and processes (and their associated parameters)
and the relationships among them. He
then illustrates the components and processes with examples. Note that the fundamental work that is being
rediscovered in the WWW was done in the early post WWII period!
