INLS 180 Day  5 Notes

January 22, 2002

  1. One-Minute Papers  (from last tue)

Big Points

Interaction (and comm.) change states (and info is a change in receiver’s mental state)

Understanding (information processing) is like interpreting art

Communication is a specialized, human process

Questions

Do recommendations reduce users’ own processing? Become dependent?

Do we really change info by accessing it?

What are the cultural/contextual influences on comm.?

Is thinking communication with oneself?

Data/info/know overlaps and disconnects?

What is 0 time (note it was 0+)?  Why is time important since entire range applicable?

When reading, am I receiving communication from author or interacting with book?

Information vs news?

Difference between data produced from info and knowledge produced from info? (scope, linkages)

If a receiver does not understand the data communicated, does it still turn into information?

  1. Project Ideas
  2. Information Seeking Perspective

We have been discussing underlying abstractions for basic processes in information science.  We have tried to isolate ‘information,’ ‘communication,’ and ‘information’ from the contexts in which they typically co-occur.  One important context is information seeking, where multiple interaction, communication processes and information processes/products are coordinated as part of larger problem solving missions.  PP slides
