MECCA

The city of Mecca is Islam's holiest city because it is where Modhammed was born in the 6th century AD. All holy sites in Mecca are off limits to non-Muslims. These pictures show the Grand Mosque and in the central courtyard, the Kaaba (a replica of God's house in heaven). As you can see, millions of Muslims visit Mecca in one day.

The five pillars of Islam are as follows:
  1. Faith- there is not god worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad (peace be upon him.)
  2. Prayer- obligatory prayers must be performed five times a day.
  3. Charity- all things belong to Allah and wealth is held by human beings in trust.
  4. Fasting- in the month of Ramadan all Muslims must fast from sun-up until sundown.
  5. Pilgrimage- the Hajj or pilgrimage to Mecca should be performed once in a Muslim's life.
