Why Do I Need Work-Life Balance?

Having work-life balance will make you a happier, more content person. You will feel successful both in your work and home life. We've all experienced times in our life when we feel like we can't possibly do all the things we need to do. Some of us live in this frenzied state almost continually. If you feel like you're constantly behind, you need to give some thought to your work-life balance.

Dealing with a work-life imbalance leads to stress. Now stress may be the most over-used word in the English language, but it's important to think about the concept. In their book Managing the Risk of Workplace Stress, Clarke and Cooper say that "stress arises when the demands of a particular encounter are appraised by the individual as about to exceed the available resources and, therefore threaten well-being, and necessitate a change in individual functioning to restore the balance." Stress makes us feel out-of-control and unable to deal with our lives.

Stress not only makes for an unpleasant existence, it can cause serious health problems as well. Stress has been linked to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, autoimmune diseases, depression, frequent headaches and muscle pain, sexual health problems, and obesity. And the longer you live with stress, the more dangerous it becomes.

This scenario will sound familiar to most: you've had a really long day, you're stressed out, and you make some big mistake. You forget your child's piano recital or you mess up a report for work. Did you know that stress can also lessen our ability to learn and perform? Stress sort of makes you stupid. The more stressed out we are, the more we try to do more than we have time for, the less efficient we are.

Is that enough incentive for you? Thinking about your work-life balance can lead to a much higher quality of life. But how do you do it? Take a look at our strategies.
