Art 111 Syllabus
Monday & Wednesday 1:00 - 3:45 Room E131 |
Two Dimensional Design will provide an introduction to basic principles of art and design. Within two-dimensional formats, we will experiment with line, shape, pattern, texture, and color using various methods of visual organization. The themes of composition, technique, and process will run throughout the course. The course will consist of slide lectures, discussions, and studio projects.Course Goals
In this class, you will:
- develop a vocabulary for the analysis and understanding of visual art in two-dimensional form
- examine the creative processes of several artists
- study basic concepts of how artwork is constructed within a given shape and space
- create artwork through a variety of media and approaches
- look critically at artwork during in-class critiques
This course is divided into seven units. There will be in-class and out-of-class projects for each unit. In-Class work consists of projects we will work on during class time. These projects will center on the unit subjects and will combine the concepts of the course with various techniques and media. Out-of-class projects will be completed outside of class, and will allow you to apply the ideas discussed and practiced in class. We will have critiques for some of these projects. Work must be completed on time and must be completely finished. Late work will result in your grade being lowered by one letter grade, unless you have an excused absence. You will be turning in a portfolio of finished work at mid-term and at the end of the semester, which will include completed in-class work and out-of-class projects. You will receive a grade for your mid-term portfolio, which will be averaged, with your final portfolio for your course grade.Assessment

Attendance
Attendance is absolutely mandatory! We will cover a lot of material in each class that will not be in the readings, so it is imperative that you attend class and take notes. I cannot re-teach missed material, so if you must miss class, make arrangements with other students for notes and assignments. Anymore than three absences will result in your grade being lowered. Missing a critique will be counted as two absences. It is very important that you attend critiques with finished work, since critiques are your opportunity to get feedback from other students. Absences are only excused with a written excuse from a doctor's office or university department. You are still responsible for assignments and projects during an excused absence.Critiques
Missing a critique will be counted as two absences. It is very important that you attend critiques with finished work, since critiques are your opportunity to get feedback from other students and to offer you own, weighty opinions.Readings
The text Design Basics by Lauer and Pentak will be on reserve in the library, along with other readings. You will be responsible for these readings, which will be supplements to our class discussions. There will be more than one copy on reserve, but make sure to plan ahead! Other readings and handouts will be given out in class.Back to top
