What's the Mullet All About?

The mullet is a worldwide phenomenon that is most evident and visible in the good 'ole U.S. of A. It is one of the most common everyday things that a person can imagine. In fact, unless a person is living an extremely sheltered life, he will see a minimum of two or three mullets a week. (Of course, that is a very low estimate.) Most people probably see more than one a day, but they are not in tune to catch mullets, and therefore miss out on the fun of picking them out and trying to categorize them.

Before we go any further, you must be dying to know, WHAT EXACTLY IS A MULLET? According to most common dictionaries, it is: Quite a Difference, Huh???

  • mul·let - 1. Any of various stout-bodied, edible fishes of the family Mugilidae, found worldwide in tropical and temperate coastal waters and some freshwater streams.

In actuality, though, the definition is undergoing a drastic change in the English language and any respectable dictionary will be including the newest definition which follows:

  • mul·let - 2. any haircut which displays hair on the top of the head that is significantly longer than that found on the side of the head.

Sounds simple enough, right? That couldn't be any farther from the truth. The amazing thing is that there are more mullets out there in the world today than ever before. The great thing about the mullet is that it comes in a plethora of shapes, sizes, colors, curl factors and thicknesses. There are a veritable cornucopia of mullets and accompanying categorical names for them. A person with a sophisticated eye for mullets can easily pick out and classify most any mullet.

Mullets were most prevalent in the '80's. The haircut could be found all over the United States. It invaded television, music, art, sports, and mainstream America. Men were the main perpetrators of the cut, but women were not even immune. In fact, they spawned their own species of mullets, known in many circles as the femullet. This web-site is devoted to educating the masses about this odd hair-do, documenting it's most interesting appearances, and giving the world a reference for uniform discussion of the style.
