SAFETY TIPS | CHILDREN | IN AN EMERGENCY

Please be aware of your surroundings at all times. Park rangers are on duty to assist visitors and are well versed in life-saving procedures. HOWEVER, park rangers are not permanently stationed in or around water areas and lifeguards may not be on duty.

Safety Tips
To prevent accidents, please remember these safety tips:

  • Learn how to swim and learn CPR.

  • Do not swim alone.

  • Use caution. Designated swimming areas at this park are unprotected by lifeguards.

  • Never swim under the influence of alcohol or medications.

  • Never swim when you hear thunder or see lightning.

  • Do not water ski in boat launching or mooring areas.

  • Wear a life vest when in or near the water.

  • Emergency phones are located near the water at some locations.

  • Remember you may be boating in unfamiliar waters with underwater hazards.

  • Exercise particular caution when approaching the shoreline. Water depths vary due to lake fluctuations and terrain.

  • Swim only within designated safe areas.

Children

  • Children should remain under close supervision at all times. Never leave children alone near water.

  • Children should wear personal flotation devices when playing in or near water. Inflatable inner tubes and "water wings" are not safety devices. Life jacket loaners are offered on site free of charge.

  • Never run, push, or jump on others around water.

  • Young children and infants should be within arm's reach every second.

  • Begin to teach children to swim at age 4.

For other safety tips or for an explanation of park rules, contact park staff.

If you find someone in trouble in the water:

  • FIRST yell for help.

  • SECOND try to help the person out of the water using a flotation device, pool hook, tree limb, etc. NEVER jump into the water to save someone! Many would-be rescuers have drowned while attempting to save a drowning person.

  • THIRD call 911 immediately and stay on the line.

  • FOURTH begin CPR. If you are not trained, follow the instructions from the 911 operator until help arrives.
