Cabin Fees Reduced at Hanging Rock and Morrow Mountain

RALEIGH - The NC Division of Parks and Recreation has reduced the rental fees for vacation cabins at Hanging Rock and Morrow Mountain state parks.

The six vacation cabins at each park will be available for $400 per week or $80 per night. The previous charges, which were adjusted during a general fee increase announced in February, were $500 per week and $100 per night. Weekly swimming passes for cabin guests remain at $20 each.

"After a trial period of about six months, we reevaluated the rental fees for these cabins and determined that our latest fee schedule could make them unaffordable for many of our regular visitors," said Susan Tillotson, superintendent of state parks. "Although the cabins are popular with few vacancies in warm-weather months, it's our intention in the state parks system to make all visitor services as affordable as possible, while balancing that against the rising cost of upkeep."

The cabins are available for weekly rentals only during summer months and for a minimum two-night stay in the spring and fall. Each can accommodate six visitors.

The division also announced plans for four additional cabins to be built at Hanging Rock State Park.   The project will be funded by the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, which since 1994 has provided support for park capital projects and land acquisition from the state's tax on real estate deed transfers.
