Open educational resources (OER) are freely accessible, openly licensed materials like text, slides, lesson plans, assignments, images, music, videos, computer programs, etc. that can be re-used by other faculty and teaching assistants when constructing or updating a course.
To help promote the use of OERs at UNC, stipends are being awarded to faculty who modify their courses to utilize OERs.
In our Carolina OER Pilot Program, up to eight stipends ($500-$1000 each) will be awarded in the spring of 2016 to help faculty redevelop their courses using OERs as opposed to more expensive resources. Funding for the pilot program is provided by a grant to Dr. Brad Hemminger in the School of Information and Library Science.
To apply for an award, please read the instructions, then complete the Proposal Form. An awards information session occurs in January, submissions are due mid February and decisions are made mid March for the following academic year. Support is available to help you develop an OER friendly course from UNC Library Liaisons, UNC Center for Faculty Excellence, and UNC Scholarly Communications Office.
Each year's award recipients are part of a cohort, and receive support from the Library, the Center for Faculty Excellence, and the campus OER group and previous award recipients, as they go through the process to modify and redevelop their courses using OERs.
See the list of previous award recipients.
