Manga, Japanese comics, are gaining popularity worldwide. Manga follow a late 19th c. style, although new technologies provide novel capabilities for manga publication. Once a manual art form, manga is becoming a digital art and so there are emerging digital libraries of manga. Professor Shigeo Sugimoto will introduce the Manga Metadata Framework, developed to support efficient production and browsing of digital manga. His presentation will highlight bibliographic relationships and characters as intellectual entities, review functional requirements of metadata for manga, and display the project’s visual structure.

Shigeo Sugimoto is the Director, Research Center for Knowledge, and a Professor in the Graduate School of Library, Information and Media Studies, University of Tsukuba, Japan. Professor Sugimoto’s primary research interest is in digital libraries their place in our information/knowledge infrastructure. His research areas include models and technologies of metadata and metadata schemas for digital resources and digital archives. He is a member of the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative’s Oversight Committee and co-chair of the DCMI Localization and Internationalization Community. He has been involved in major international conferences on digital libraries in Asia, Europe, and North America as an organizer and program committee member. Professor Sugimoto earned a Ph.D. in Information Science (software engineering and programming languages) from Kyoto University in 1985.

To demonstrate, Dr. Sugimoto has shared a link to a manga created by one of Shigeo’s students.

This event is co-sponsored by the SILS Metadata Research Center and UNC-ASIS&T.

Jane Smith, Metadata Research Center research assistant and accomplished artist/opera singer, recently completed an internship with the Policy and Standards Division at the Library of Congress. Her work included integral steps for transforming the Library of Congress Medium of Performance Thesaurus (LCMPT) to SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System). The LCMPT is a joint Library of Congress and Music Library Association project used to represent and retrieve music by medium of performance for musical works, as represented in individual music resources. Ms. Smith’s work is important for RDA: Resource Description and Access and linked data developments. The LCMPT project will be published on the Web and will be compatible with Semantic Web standards.

Where: University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Davis Library, Room 214 (A & B)

Open access and copyright issues can dominate discussions addressing the reuse of digital resources. Metadata reuse has introduced a host of rights questions and challenges. Metadata rights were explored during the course INLS 720: Metadata Architectures and Applications this past fall as part of a student presentation. Our meeting will cover copyright in the context of metadata, plus two case studies (one examining Duke University Press and the other examining open bibliographic data). The presentation wrap up with a series of questions for discussion.
