Dr. Jane Greenberg named NCDS Data Fellow

Dr. Jane Greenberg, director of the Metadata Research Center, has been named a 2014 Data Fellow by the National Consortium for Data Science. The fellowship will support Dr. Greenberg’s Metadata Capital Initiative, a project intended to help formulate and discover methods for assessing the ‘value’ of metadata, and how that value changes over time.
The goal of the NCDS is to help prepare American industry, academia, and government meet the challenges presented by big data, and to support the ongoing development of data science and policy. Dr. Greenberg’s work will help provide an evidence-based practice framework for metadata creation and development, enriched by collaboration with leaders in data use and creation in both the public and private sectors.

Sara Mannheimer appointed new Dryad Curator

Recent SILS graduate Sara Mannheimer has been appointed the new curator at Dryad Digital Repository, following the departure of Elena Feinstein in July.
During her time as the interim curator, Mannheimer has already worked on Dryad’s draft preservation policy, sharing an award with doctoral student Ayoung Yoon for a poster outlining the policy’s creation presented at the annual ASIS&T meeting in Montreal.

Dryad Poster wins ASIS&T Prize

The poster “Developing Preservation Policy for Dryad Digital Repository,” created by interim Dryad Curator Sara Mannheimer and SILS Doctoral student Ayoung Yoon has won a “Best Poster” prize at the 2013 annual ASIS&T meeting in Montreal, Canada. The poster described the efforts of the Dryad preservation working group in creating a draft preservation policy for the Dryad Digital Repository. The policy is an important step in Dryad’s digital preservation mission, and the draft will be presented to the Dryad Board of Directors in November.

Angela Murillo presents Poster in Albuquerque

SILS Doctoral student Angela Murillo presented a poster entitled “Data Sharing and Reuse in the Sciences: An Investigation of Selected Cyberinfrastructure and Interoperability Elements” at the DataONE All-Hands meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico on October 22, 2013. The poster outlined the preliminary research for Ms. Murillo’s dissertation, which will focus on elements that facilitate or interfere with data sharing and reuse within the DataONE environment.

Call for participation: CAMP-4-DATA

Dublin Core-Science and Metadata Community and Research Data Alliance are hosting a day-long Metadata Interest Group workshop, CAMP-4-DATA, on Sept. 6, 2013 in Lisbon, Portugal. Submissions for participation are currently open in the areas of short papers, abstracts, and position statements. The intent of this workshop is to discuss and forward challenges and opportunities relating to metadata standards for the management of scientific data, and how policies, applications, and infrastructure can foster creation of and access to sustainable, open, and collective standards.

Submissions will remain open through June 28, 2013. For more information on how to apply and the topics to be discussed, please see the CAMP-4-DATA Workshop Call for Participation.

Survey for controlled vocabulary users

We’re conducting a brief survey on the uses and challenges of controlled vocabularies. If you are a curator, administrator, or developer for a for a repository, or a researcher who has contributed data to a repository, please lend us 10-15 minutes of your time to help us learn about how you use controlled vocabularies, and how their utility can be improved. The survey can be found here.
