New page

Hi SILSters! I am running for VP of AMLISS and I am very excited about all of the opportunities to learn about arts librarianship and visual resource management UNC and the triangle have to offer. I am a first year LS student and I would like to focus on arts librarianship, visual resource management, humanities reference, scholarly communications (and many other things since I am still working out what I want to do after graduating). I have a BA in History and Political Science from Georgia State University in Atlanta and I currently intern for the library of the Hamner Institute for Health Sciences and nanny for a family here in Chapel Hill to help pay the bills. While in undergrad I was an active member of Phi Alpha Theta (the historical honors society) and helped plan events and conferences at GSU and around Atlanta. I also worked at the National Archives as an undergrad student and helped to organize public programs and workshops which featured the records held at the Southeastern branch.

I love to travel (most recently I spent a chunk of time over the summer in Germany) and I have studied abroad in China and Turkey. My dream job after graduating from SILS would be to work in a design, graphic design, or architecture academic library or private institution such as a graphic design or typography design firm. I like German Dadaism, southern folk art, Fluxus, and typography design (to name a few) and this is probably way too much information, but oh well. I also like to cross stitch, embroider, drink wine, play board games, hang out with my dog, go to the opera, go to hockey games, and go to art museums/galleries (I guess that is an obvious one though).

For AMLISS, I would like to plan visits to the Harrye B. Lyons Design Library at NCSU and the Nasher and Ackland Art Museums. I would also like to invite speakers who work in visual resources management from institutions such as the Full Frame Archive at Duke and the Media Resources Center here at UNC. If you have any questions for me, please feel free to email me at [mailto:ksmith80@email.unc.edu ksmith80@email.unc.edu].

Thanks!<br>Kelly<br>

New page

Hello all,

I'm a first year dual degree student in LS and Art History and I'm running for President of AMLISS. I'm interested broadly in art librarianship, visual resource management, and museum registration and am still trying to learn as mush as I can about these exciting areas of our field and figure out what interests me most. Within Art History I am most interested in European Modernism. I'm also interested in American art of the 20th century, the history of photography, and popular and material culture. Plus, I love going to museums and am always looking for fellow art enthusiasts to join me . I am currently working as a collections intern at the Raleigh City Museum.

I&nbsp;have an undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis in Art History with a second major in psychology and a minor in studio art. Apprehensive about the prospect of earning a living as an art historian and not wanting to become a professor, I&nbsp;decided to go to Vanderbilt for an M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology and I spent the last year working as a speech therapist in nursing homes. However, I&nbsp;was never happy in this career and always regretted not sticking with art history. So I&nbsp;decided to quit and change directions completely, back to where my &nbsp;interests had always lied - in art. When I&nbsp;discovered art librarianship as a possible career that would allow me to continue learning about art and support others who do so without being a professor myself, I&nbsp;quickly applied to a few dual degree programs, quit my job, and came to UNC, my first choice school. I'm so&nbsp;happy&nbsp;to be going in a new direction and finally doing something that I&nbsp;really love, and in the spirit of that enthusiasm I want to take advantage of all the opportunities here at UNC for learning and advancing my career - one of those being an active involvement in AMLISS.

Knowing that a group like AMLISS existed here positively influenced my decision to come to UNC and I'm excited that there's a community of people here that share my love of art. I know I've been missing from a few AMLISS events, most notably the Nasher trip - I'm still sad that I was sick that weekend - but I have scaled back my schedule next semester and would love the opportunity to become more involved and make some connections in the local professional community while learning more about the field. I would also love to hear what you all are interested in and organize some AMLISS events that will be both fun and informative for those of us with an interest in art and information.

Best,

I will recruit an archivist from Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC come and tell us about the records management perspective. I'd like to create an event and encourage members of SCOSAA, and all people who are interested in preservation, to go to preservation workshops and get hands on experience in how preservation works. Tours of the Conservation Lab, overnight trips to the Biltmore Estate Archives in Asheville. More: discussions with NARA reps, tours of the Duke Med Center Archives, and invitations for SAA members to introduce some of the new and exciting things in archives going on today.

In terms of what I have planned for SCOSAA, I would love to have representatives from several archives (corporate, library, and museum) come and tell us about their work and experiences.
New page

&nbsp;Francesca Perez – Nominee for SCOSAA President<br> <br>Hello, my name is Francesca Perez and I am second semester MSLS student. I graduated from Meredith College in 2007 with a BA in Public History with a minor in American Civilization. As an undergraduate, I held various leadership roles including Vice President of the Senior Class of 2007. I was also the treasurer of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI) an International Music Fraternity. I was responsible for the treasurer annual report to give to SAI. I will help the secretary with the annual report to give to SAA.

I had internships at the North Carolina State Archives and the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences. I studied aboard twice in Europe. I also participated in the College Program at Walt Disney World. Currently I work at the North Carolina State Archives in the Public Service and Special Collections Branches. I am most interested in photograph collections. I enjoy reading, watching movies, and hanging out with my energetic dog and two cats.<br> <br>I feel that SCOSAA can provide many opportunities for students to get involved in the archival world.<br>• I will create a mentor program for SILS students and archivists. This will allow for students to a have a mentor with an archivist to ask questions and visit the mentor’s job location. Students would be paired with an archivist that has the same interest as the student.<br>• I feel that communication is very important. We will communicate with students about archival events happening in the area. This will allow for students to learn about interesting events. I want students to feel free and make suggestions about events they want to have at SILS.<br>• Since I am a member of SAA, I will represent SILS SCOSAA at the SAA annual meeting. I want to encourage as many SILS students to attend the SAA conference. It is an important time for learning new things happening in the field and networking.<br>• I will attend the Society of North Carolina Archivist (SNCA) annual meeting. I also will encourage students to go to SNCA to meet archivist in the area.<br>• I want to bring in archivists working in the field to have panel discussions.<br>• I want to have field trips to the State Archives and other institutions in the area.<br> <br>Thank you for looking at my page during this stressful end of semester time. Please vote for Francesca Perez for SCOSAA President!

New page

'''About Bethany Richardson:'''

I am a first-year LS student specializing in Children’s and Youth Services in public libraries. I grew up in Staunton, Virginia, whose claims to fame are the Blackfriars Playhouse and the Woodrow Wilson Birthplace. I grew up going to Shakespeare performances at the Blackfriars, which undoubtedly influenced my interests in English and theatre. I attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA, where I majored in English,&nbsp;volunteered in Circulation at the local public library,&nbsp;performed with the student theatre group Shakespeare in the Dark, and worked in the costume shop for the theatre department.

The summer before my senior year, I created my own family literacy program to help struggling readers and their parents use library resources and reading comprehension strategies to improve the students' reading skills. I was very involved in volunteer activities as a member of Golden Key International Honor Society my junior and senior years. As Vice President of Golden Key my senior year, I organized multiple volunteer and social events, including a book drive to benefit Eastern State Mental Hospital's Patient Library, a Campus Cleanup Day involving collaboration with other campus groups and offices, and a pizza party for current and prospective members. I also organized volunteers to assist library staff at the ESMH Patient Library with processing and cataloging donations. I hope to apply my experience with event planning and volunteer organization to the position of SCALA VP.&nbsp;<br>

'''Platform: '''<br>I will maintain SCALA’s history of providing educational and professional development events for SILS students, and I plan to expand our event offerings to include occasional volunteer or charity opportunities, such as holding a book drive or helping out with activities at local schools or libraries. Or course I haven’t forgotten about the basic needs of graduate students, so I would like to organize one or two social events each semester involving such necessities as coffee, cupcakes, pizza, ice cream...you get the idea. As your SCALA Vice President, I will welcome any event suggestions and do my best to make them happen. <br>

New page

Hello Everyone!

<br>I am a first year LS student originally from Buffalo, New York. I must say that back home my family has been scraping ice off of their cars for weeks now so I'm grateful for this better North Carolina weather!

<br>I'm also really grateful for this opportunity to run for treasurer of SLA. I am looking forward to collaborating with other students to bring more attention to special libraries and special patrons. I am currently pursuing the track of School Library Media Coordinator to learn how to best serve the children and teens in our communities. I was always very fortunate to have wonderful librarians or educators that made reading an adventure and learning an opportunity to use imagination and creativity. Learning happens in so many places and special libraries have unique opportunities to spread information and knowledge to a variety of people. I hope to pass on excitement and curiosity about new ideas and perspectives to children that I hope to work with, either in a school library, museum library, or other setting. <br>I look forward to helping plan and organize great activities for SILS students to learn more about special libraries and will bring my attention to detail to the tasks of being treasurer. Thank you for voting and good luck with the rest of your semester!

New page

Hello SILSters! I am running for your SCOSSA president and am really excited about what great things I can do with this position. First, a little about me. I am a first year MLS student with an ARM concentration (appropriate, no?). I went to UGA undergrad and have a BA in History with a minor in Classical Cultures.&nbsp; I've studied abroad three times, one of which was to study wine production in Tuscany (bellissimi vini!), another studying French in Nice, and the last studying Ancient Roman architecture and art in Rome.<br>

I have experience in leadership from undergraduate organizations I was in - I&nbsp;was the history department's representative to the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. I&nbsp;shared opinions and concerns with the Dean while I&nbsp;was on the Student Advisory Board, talking with her personally and with other student representatives for thier respective departments. I currently work for Dr. Tibbo (the faculty advisor for SCOSSA) as her research assistant, along with Kerry Lemelin. I have experience working in medical archives and doing research for physicians.

In terms of what I have planned for SCOSSA, I would love to have representatives from several archives (corporate, library, and museum) come and tell us about their work and experiences. I will recruit an archivist from Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC come and tell us about the records management perspective. I'd like to create an event and encourage members of SCOSSA, and all people who are interested in preservation, to go to preservation workshops and get hands on experience in how preservation works. Tours of the Conservation Lab, overnight trips to the Biltmore Estate Archives in Asheville. More: discussions with NARA reps, tours of the Duke Med Center Archives, and invitations for SAA members to introduce some of the new and exciting things in archives going on today.
Thank you for your vote and please feel free to email me if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas! <br>

I’m a first-year LS student with a big interest in special libraries. I’m a member of the national and North Carolina SLA chapters and, within that, the Science-Technology division. I work currently at the Carolina Population Center library, one of the many special libraries at UNC.
I was a business minor in college, so I did finance and accounting classes. I love numbers and have managed budgets before. Besides ensuring that SLA’s money is well managed, I’m excited about fundraising for SLA. I want to talk to and write to anyone who will listen about getting additional funds. There are many, many possible programs that SLA could put on, but none of those are possible without enough money.

Christine Cheng is a second generation Chinese American who was born in Reno, Nevada. She grew up, however, in Lincoln, Nebraska, as she attended junior high, high school, and college there. At Nebraska Wesleyan University, she earned her B.A. in Global Studies (aka, International Relations or Affairs) and a minor in German. Now at UNC, she is in her first year of working toward her Master’s in Library Science.

Prior to her studies at NWU, she spent a year in Germany as an exchange student. After graduating from college, the wanderlust struck again. She traveled to Japan and taught English to elementary and junior high school students for 4 years. She loves traveling as much as eating cuisine and food from different places. So far, she has been to 17 foreign countries. Her wanderlust, for the moment, has been adequately satisfied but her hunger for delicious food has not.

As an undergraduate, she was involved in the campus organization, International Relations Organization (IRO) – an organization comprised of American and international students. She eventually served as the President of IRO and later as the Student Affairs Senate (SAS) representative for NWU’s international student body. It was while serving in NWU’s governing body for students that she learned the most about representing the voices of others responsibly.

== Christine’s platform ==

As Vice President, Christine hopes to play both a supportive and leadership role within SCALA. Her responsibility is to ensure that all of you have plenty of water to put out the fires by providing the tools and information necessary to accomplishing your academic and professional objectives.<br>

New page

Hello, SILS!

I'm an aspiring academic librarian, with a concentration in government documents, from Northern Virginia. I graduated from the University of Virginia in 2009, where I studied Cognitive Science and Psychology. Over the years I volunteered at Bainbridge Island Public Library (near Seattle, WA), interned at the U.S. Government Printing Office in Washington D.C., which executes the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP), and spent many a summer providing 'reference' services at Barnes &amp; Noble.

As an undergraduate I held a variety of elected positions, and I've found myself with too much time on my hands my first semester in graduate school.&nbsp; As a student member of ALA I am looking forward to taking an active role in the Student Chapter of ALA here at Chapel Hill as Treasurer. I've enjoyed attending various events hosted by SCALA, such as the Federal Librarianship Panel and The View...From the Reference Desk, and look forward to coordinating the budget for events that will benefit the SILS student body next year.<br>

I am a first semester SILS&nbsp;student on the MSLS&nbsp;track, interested in special and academic libraries. I&nbsp;have a varied background, which includes a small web startup, localization project management, and German language instruction.
New page

== About Me: ==

I am a first year student here at SILS. Though my professional interest lies in special libraries, my course work is split pretty evenly between LS and IS. I am originally from Ann Arbor, MI and got my B.A. in Art History from the University of Cincinnati. In undergrad I also studied Architecture, Music History, Anthropology, and Italian. During my time at Cincinnati I worked in the Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning library. I have also worked in a classics library, and worked to develop a resource library for the UNC’s Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. Most recently, I spent 18 months in Copenhagen working in the library of DIS (the Danish Institute for Study Abroad), a small academic institution. Now, currently, I am an intern at the EPA and am enjoying the specialized library environment more than ever.<br>

== My Interest in SLA: ==

Special libraries are so fascinating, and our chapter of SLA can provide us with the opportunity to learn about new and unusual environments, current issues in today’s special libraries, and how to seek out and apply for jobs. I would love to do my part to help SLA organize as many wonderful student events as possible. I was the designated minutes recorder for DIS staff meetings and I’m comfortable and adept with recording and organizing agendas, brainstorms, plans of action, doodles, etc. <br>

=== ''A brief history...'' ===

After completing a BA in English (with minors in Spanish and History) at the University of Iowa, I decided to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in secondary English.&nbsp; Although I adored the students I worked with (especially so-labeled 'at-risk' students) during my program, and although I truly loved teaching, after completing my student teaching experience at Jordan High School in Durham, NC, I decided to investigate more sustainable ways of engaging with literacy development within a wider population.&nbsp; Currently, I am working at the Undergraduate Library at UNC at the reference desk, in the multimedia Collaboratory lab, as an instructor for English 101 &amp;&nbsp;102 classes teaching undergraduates how to use the library's resources, as well as on various other Web-based projects.&nbsp; Thus far, I am truly enjoying the program here at SILS - my fellow students, the faculty, the coursework, the opportunities for involvement - and I feel quite at home in this new profession.

= As a candidate =

=== ''What I could provide as secretary of ILSSA'' ===

Through my teaching experience, both in multiple high school environments and here at UNC, I have developed the ability to plan short- and long-term projects within carefully considered objectives.&nbsp; Through my experience as a secretary at a clinical research center and as an intern at Duke University&nbsp;Press, I have also developed the ability to juggle multiple on-going projects and coordinate among multiple departments/groups/persons.&nbsp; I am exceptionally well-organized, have an uncanny attention for detail, love working with people, and would value the opportunity to support the other members (both elected and general) of ILSSA through the planning of events (orientation, holiday party, spring picnic), keeping of meeting minutes, and maintaining and fostering communication both internally and within the wider SILS community.

I'm a first year MSLS student with a concentation in archives. I also have a MA in history, and my general area of interest is in Federal and academic libraries. I also hope to gain more experience with digitization projects. Prior to UNC, I was the research services coordinator at George Mason University's Special Collections &amp;&nbsp;Archives where I mostly worked with patron requests, exhibits, digitizing documents &amp; photographs, and maintenance of the rare book collections.

I'm excited to get involved with SCOSSA, and look forward to working with everybody on archive related projects.

What does it mean to be an Information and Library Science professional? When confronted with that question today, I think many of us find ourselves at a loss for words. As the top program in the United States, I think we should be able to do better than that. </ins>

+

Being able to critically think is important, but like many of you, I'd like to see more relevance. Where do theory and reality intersect? What significant issues aren't publicized or examined closely? And more importantly, how can we move forward? </ins>

+

<br>I am a first year LS student interested in archives and special collections. I am a student member of the SAA, and I really want to get more involved with SCOSAA.&nbsp; As Treasurer, I hope to help us fundraise and utilize our money to do fun and interesting things.

<br>I have experience with budgets and simple accounting from previous undergrad leadership positions in clubs and student government, so you can rest assured that I will keep track of our finances.<br><br>

She has experience with html, elementary experience with CSS, and is flirting with Javascript.

She would love this position not only as a chance to support the SCALA, but also as a chance to practice and keep up with her web skills.

She has created or helped create several websites and digital projects. The URLs will be posted here Tuesday evening!
