Bibliographies

The creation of a bibliography of the complete works of Thomas Pynchon proves to be a very daunting task due to his extreme secrecy and desire for anonymity and privacy even as a published author. The bibliographies listed below are useful for finding listings of Pynchon's works as well as further information in the form of articles critiquing them.

Walsh, Thomas P. and Northouse, Cameron. John Barth, Jerzy Kosinski, and Thomas Pynchon: A Reference Guide. (Boston : G.K. Hall & Co.), 1977.
[Davis Z1231.F4 W34]

This resource contains bibliographies for three of the most prominent postmodern American authors, with an introduction with provides a little background information on each of the author's works and describes the organization of the book. Although this resource predates the publication of Vineland and Mason & Dixon, the thoroughness of the materials discussed, however, and their chronological organization makes this resource worthy of examination.

Mead, Clifford. Thomas Pynchon: A Bibliography of Primary and Secondary Materials. (Elmwood Park, IL : Dalkey Archive Press), 1989.
[Davis Z8721.5 M43 1989]

This is a substantially more detailed and more up-to-date bibliography of primary and secondary Pynchon-related materials. An interesting aspect of this resource is that under the "books" section is an exhaustive list (as of 1989) of the known versions of each novel with pictures of most editions included. Aside from the novels, contributions and endorsements, translations and unauthorized editions are also mentioned. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this bibliography is the inclusion of the full text of six pieces of Pynchon's early (high school) works, and nine pages of pictures from one of Pynchon's yearbooks. This is noteworthy since they are likely some of the only pictures of the author that are known to exist.
