La Roque St. Christophe

The End

On our way westwards from Lascaux towards Bordeaux, we decided on the spur of the moment to stop at this interesting and unusual site. Its location is remote, and it is only written about in local travel sources.

The cliff shown in this photo contains five levels of natural caves which were used as dwelling space from prehistory through the Middle Ages. Some faint but authentic cave paintings are evidence of the prehistoric inhabitants, and the foundations of homes and other buildings remain from later residents.

At the entrance to the site, we picked up a brochure with information in five languages. The English text shown below explains more about La Roque St. Christophe and shows a drawing of what it might have looked like as a fortified medieval town.

La Roque St. Christophe was the last site we visited in southern France. From there we drove to Bordeaux, returned our rental car, and boarded a train for Paris. We had set aside two days for sightseeing in Paris, but our plans were foiled on both days by the French tourist industry's continued strike. Security was very tight as we made our way through the airport in Paris to fly home on a nearly empty airplane.
