The Carcassonne Region |
Only a few of Europe's medieval walled towns
survive with their ramparts still intact. Today Carcassonne is a popular
tourist destination because it is one of these rare historic jewels. Since we had a significant distance to cover from Avignon to Carcassonne, we bravely took the motorway. I think it traumatized my mother! In three lanes of traffic, trucks went about 50 to 60 mph in the right two lanes and cars zipped by at up to or over 90 mph in the left lane. I did most of the driving on this stretch and definitely found it unnerving. Fortunately we arrived in Carcassonne intact, but after driving on the motorway and then getting completely lost in the new city I was not in a very good mood. |
