Directions

 

If possible, work in small groups for this exercise (preferably groups of 2 or 3). Each group should submit one assignment with all names clearly at the top. Make sure your group thoroughly discusses your answers. Answer 5 of the following questions. Give the answer to each question, complete citations for the information found, and any other details about your search, e.g. where you looked unsuccessfully, problems you found with a source, etc. For some of these questions you may find the answer, or parts of the answer in a number of sources. Please note discrepancies between sources. Save time: look for each of these items as you examine a given source.

Members of the group presenting Directories in class do not need to complete this assignment.

Submit your answers via Blackboard. All members of a group should submit this assignment: if you do not submit an assignment, Blackboard will allow me to give you a grade, but not narrative feedback.

  1. I am a parent who would like to home school her child. I know there are regulations. Which agency must approve this if I live in Chapel Hill or anywhere in North Carolina?

  2. What libraries in the United States have strong collections in Icelandic studies?

  3. When was the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases founded? What branch of the U.S. Public Health Service is it in, and what year was the branch founded?

  4. I’m an undergraduate student who wants to get into Ancient (especially Mediterranean) history. Are there any e-journals that I could subscribe to or any discussion lists?

  5. I heard that there’s a political action committee for beer wholesalers. Is it true, and if so, what’s their address?

  6. I have family in Australia and I am interested in looking for a library job there. Where can I find out about universities in Australia and their addresses?

  7. Where can I find a list of the one hundred largest foundations by total giving?

  8. I am looking for a list of bed and breakfast inns in North Carolina. Where can I write or call for this information?

  9. Is there a film society devoted exclusively to Steven Spielberg? Where can I get information about it?

  10. What is the address of the U.S. embassy in South Africa?

  11. Where can I find a list of the most important museums, learned societies, research centers, and universities in the world (all of this information must come from one source)?

  12. I want to know an address for an office in North Carolina for Representative David Price who represents Chapel Hill in the U.S. Congress. Where can I find it?

Grading

 

5 points per question = 25 points total

Your answer to each question will be evaluated according to the following rubric. I will assign one point for each item, per question:

  1. You found the answer to the question.
  2. You found the answer in appropriate sources, and used more than one source.
  3. You discuss the details of the answer you found, including disambiguating any ambiguities in the question.
  4. You discuss the details of the sources you used: features, pros and cons, what the sources included and did not include, appropriate evaluation criteria, etc.
  5. You discuss the details of your searching process, for and within each source.
