INLS 285 Information Use for Organizational Effectiveness
Section 1, Fall 2007
Assignments and Evaluation

Student responsibilities for the class consist of completing the readings, in-class and out-of-class assignments and discussions, a portfolio assignment, a midterm examination, and a final examination.  The value of these activities with respect to a class grade is as follows:

Assignments                               40% (10% each)
In-class activities                        15%
Midterm exam                             20%
Final Examination & portfolio    25%

The grading scale applied to graduate students and undergraduate students differs somewhat, and SILS recognizes some variations internally.  Students are expected to abide by the provisions of the UNC honor code at all times and in all situations.

Please note: Students who fail to complete assignments or take examinations will receive a grade of zero, no credit, for each assignment or activity missed. Exceptions will be made in extreme circumstances only and should be requested in advance when possible. A grade of IN (incomplete) is reserved for those who cannot complete the course requirements due to extreme circumstances. Students must request permission for an incomplete in advance, but requesting the incomplete will not guarantee that it will be approved.

Assignments

Students are responsible for four information case assignments, each worth 10% of the grade.  The assignments are designed to allow students to apply some of the ideas discussed in the course.

Information Case 1. Information Ethics.
Information Case 2. Organizational culture.
Information Case 3.  Information quality.
Information Case 4. Organizational knowledge strategies.

In-Class Activities and Portfolio Assignment

Class participation is important and will be considered at the time final grades are computed.  Attendance and timeliness are factors that influence participation.  The quality of comments in class and in online discussions will also be utilized in evaluating participation.  The course listserv and discussion areas in blackboard may also be used to share information with others. Students who are habitually late or miss class frequently will receive only minimal credit for class participation.

In addition to the assignments scheduled for outside of class, there will be activities and discussions in class for which students will receive grades. Some of these are group assignments. These activities are marked on the course outline and on the blackboard site.

One of the most important assignments for the class is your portfolio. The portfolio assignment is designed to provide you with the opportunity to correct misunderstandings and to reflect upon what you are learning. The portfolio is due at the end of the semester on the day of the final examination.

Instructor class notes will be made available daily on the blackboard site if you want them. They should be available the day before class. Downloading course notes is not an alternative to attending class.
